Ngā Whetū Hei Whai
Charting Pathways for Māori Industry Futures
National Conference

27th – 28th August, 2012

Welcome to the Ngā Whetū Hei Whai: Charting Pathways for Māori Industry Futures Conference hosted by Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust in Rotorua, 27th – 28th August, 2012.

The Conference is designed to attract industry leaders as well as iwi, Māori trusts and incorporations and other Māori business leaders. The Conference is designed to encourage the identification of scenarios and strategies towards positive Māori industry outcomes in the long term. As the Post Treaty Settlement Era dawns, shared strategic visioning is sought that will help establish clear industry pathways to spearhead Māori economic development.

In 2012, the focus will be on two key areas:

  • collaboration - a key theme to emerge from the 2011 Conference; and
  • the fisheries industry – the industry focus of the new Rona
Scholarship launched by Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust in 2012; and
  • Māori and indigenous governance – a key workstream for
    Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust

The Conference will ask some key question:

  • What will (or should) key Māori industries look like in 20 or 30 years time, and how do we get there?
  • How can we collaborate to achieve these visions?
  • Whether it be fisheries, farming, horticulture, forestry, health, aged care, property development or energy, answering this question will help ensure Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust effectively support the development and education of Māori to help lift capacity and capability to achieve these Māori Industry Futures.

The Conference will see panel sessions covering a range of key industries: sheep and beef; dairy; energy; horticulture; tourism; ICT and telecommunications; property development; health and aged care; forestry; fisheries and aquaculture; and others.

The Conference is also designed to showcase the 40 recipients of Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust’s two tertiary scholarships:

  • Tāwera Scholarship for Māori completing a business, commerce, or management bachelor degree. Conference attendees will get to meet the 30 scholarship recipients for 2012 and the recipients themselves will gain an insight into how they can play a part in the Māori Industry Futures being charted.
  • Rona Scholarship for Māori completing a degree related to the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Conference attendees will get to meet the first 10 scholarship recipients and the recipients themselves will gain an insight into how they can play a part in the future of the Māori fisheries and aquaculture industries.

Another focus of the Conference is to try and match as many scholarship recipients as possible with organisations offering opportunities for: a job or career; scholarships; internships; further training; or other way to support these students as they complete their degrees.
